Basic Emergency Care Course
The WHO Basic Emergency Care course was run at Clarke International University (CIU) from 28th – 31st January 2019 in the Main lecture hall. The course was specifically designed to train healthcare providers in resource poor environments with a focus on how to approach emergency situations and triage patients.
Two facilitators from Project Helping Hands i.e. Jean Proehl and Chris run the course with the help of some CIU academic staff who were appointed to support the facilitators in various areas. Most of the participants were CIU students and alumni. Nurses were the biggest percentage of the group while others included clinical medical officers, physiotherapists, public health officers, and a few were non-medical.
Throughout the training, five (5) modules were covered and they include;
- The ABCDE and SAMPLE history approach.
- Approach to trauma.
- Approach to difficulty in breathing.
- Approach to shock.
- Approach to altered mental status.
All participants as a must had to acquire a participant’s work book which had questions and tests that had to be answered on a daily as the lectures went on. The workbook also had facilitator led case scenarios which were discussed and managed in small groups. Each participant had to attend all lectures and successfully lead and manage case scenarios in each module.
At the end of the course, participants under took a post course exam which had to be passed with a score of above 75%to earn a certificate. All activities were accomplished successfully and all participants scored above 75% which enabled them earn a certificate each. This made the students to become the first trainees of this program throughout Africa.
